Official Summary: “Princess Haven was never meant to be queen.

Her immortality has saved her time and time again, but when the last of her royal family dies at her feet, she is next in line to rule a nation on the brink of war. With no formal training, Haven must rise to the occasion with the help of her personal guards, or risk losing everyone she has ever loved.

Between assassination attempts and brutal scare tactics, the evil tyrant Kadia’s army is fast approaching. Haven’s neighbors are quick to fall under the swords of Kadia’s shadow soldiers, leaving a sea of bodies and a clear path to Haven’s only home.

Haven must make a choice; take her people and flee to the foreign Republic across the sea or lead a last stand against a powerful dictator.” – Goodreads

Review: The friendship/family built between her and her 3 bodyguards is so richly built. It was one of the main things I really enjoyed about this book, seeing the relationships change and develop. It not your typical bodyguard/royal situation. Haven is trying and is protecting them more than they are her. But they understand her so completely and are always trying to be there for her. It nice to see a kick-ass group of women who just love each other.

The scene that shall not be named was so well done. The aftermath of that scene was so well written. It made you feel so deeply for her. It also made you feel for the people around her, who just want to help her but have no idea how to. I think that scene and the scenes after were the best in the book. It forced the main character to develop more in a way she didn’t think was possible. It also showed her true family around her.

It was also nice to see some Kingdoms working together and just trying to exist. It very rare to come across fantasy type books where Kingdoms ask for help and get help in return. They were protecting their people but at the same time trying to help their friends. The relationships there were very well done and added a nice tone to the story.

Two of her bodyguards are in a relationship. Female/female you don’t really see much of this but know it is there.
