I am no blogging expert. I am learning as I’m going. Some things I fuck up, somethings I pick up. Most things I just wing it. Either way here 1 thing I’ve learnt as a new book blogger part 9;
Check the dashboard regularly.
WordPress is great for catching spam, you don’t have to download plugins for the system to catch it. At the same time it, not 100% perfect. I use another plugin called Akismet Anti-Spam. Which helps but again isn’t perfect. It tends to flag stuff that isn’t spam. Can just simply be because it was posted the exact same time as something else. Or it just had keywords that flagged the system. So onto my point.
Make sure to check the dashboard at least once a week to check what the system has flagged as spam is spam. Check the comments and feedback. When you unspam something it should go to your notifications or to your email if it is a feedback.
If you need any more information leave a comment.
Really good tip – Akismet does an epic job of catching spam, but eeeeevery now and again it decides something legit should go in the box.
Good advice:) catching some of the great comments in my spam regularly:)?
Sorry “?” – just a mistake 😂
After reading this I immediately checked my dashboard and guess what some of the comments were marked spam for no reason at all. So, thank you for writing this post.😊
Lol you are welcome
I really don’t understand the spam thing. Can you please enlighten me? I did see the Askimet olugin but I know hkw that works out.
Sure. Dashboard – Comments. At the top you should see All, Pending, Approved, Spam and Trash. In the ( ) it will show if you have any comments in spam. Just click Spam. Then it will give you an option below the comment. Not spam. You click that and it un-spams it. It pretty much the same for feedback
Thank you so much! I just followed the steps and so far, I don’t have any spam. Will definitely be checking it once in a while now 😁 This was a very helpful post!
No problem.
This gets super helpful! Checking the dashboard every once in a while helps me sort things if they are marked wrongly as spam, because while some readers leave this sweet and long comment, WordPress thinks it’s span. I love this series of yours 😀
Thank you.
I’ll have to look on the dashboard on my phone as I haven’t seen that yet. I haven’t gotten any spam but maybe I’m missing comments?
That is also possible. I am not sure if WordPress regularly cleans out the spam. I have a feeling it may do.
I checked and there’s not a phone option for anything other than the comments I’ve already seen. Oh well!
Wow! I’m clearly clueless as I didn’t even know what the dashboard was …. thanks so much … looking forward to anything and everything else! How can I have been blogging for 5 weeks and have only just learnt this! 💙
Took me awhile to find out about the dashboard too.
Yup good advice! I always do check my spam (eventually- I’m so irregular about it 😉 )
Excellent tip!
Definitely have gotten in the habit of checking for spam more frequently because comments get caught up in there that shouldn’t. The crazy thing is that sometimes comments from approved commenters get caught in there. Definitely don’t understand that.
Me neither.
Off I go to figure out what this dashboard thing is…
Want any help?
Thank you for the offer, I googled it and have found it. I’ve also found heaps of other interesting info, which i’m going to spend my arvo reading through. Thank you for your post 🙂
Np
Thanks so much for this Laura!! It’s something I started doing since I checked by mistake once and saw nearly ten comments in spam that weren’t actually spam!!
I’m new to blogging in general, but WordPress makes staying up to date with notifications easy
I honestly wish WP had a document that we could read that throughouly goes through everything you need to know about WP – i’m still confused about plug ins (which ones should I get, why?) and trying to optimize the search. do you know how to get the WP site where there’s a community forum/and daily posts? Sorry if that sounds confusing, but i read somewhere that you can go to the WP site and find new emerging blogs and post yours to get feedback.
It all depends on what you need. I only have a few plugins. I don’t need a lot. Akismet Anti-Spam, AMP, Instagram Feed, Jetpack by WordPress.com.
What’s Instagram feed? I don’t know what I need. Lol more readers
if you go on my main page on the right you should see my instagram posts. That is what the plugin does.
Ohhh I think this is why I can’t get mine! You helped me figure something out!!
If you need any help just say
Aww thank you so much!! Let me take some time real quick and try to get this Instagram working
Youtube the addon and wordpress, I learned most of my stuff from there.
This is such a helpful post! I’m going to go and check mine now! Thank you!
Hope you don’t have many in spam.
